Meat CSA

Dear Meat Lover,

Welcome to the 2010 Meat CSA!

What is a Meat CSA?

Our Meat CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is a way for you to provide your family with ethically raised, Prince Edward County beef, bird, lamb, pork directly from JC Nyman Farms, and have it delivered every month from June to November. (We also have free range eggs!)

Instead of raising livestock and trying to sell it…we sell it first and then raise it. That’s how a CSA works. This reduces waste and costs.

Why a Meat CSA?

Grocery stores are more like minefields these days. To get the real picture from the labels you not only have to be a chemist but also a lawyer! This is the result of food production becoming a business – about making profits – instead of promoting good health.

In order to increase profits, mass produced livestock are confined, given feed containing pesticides, and routinely given growth hormones and antibiotics. There is nothing natural or humane about their raising and the ill health effects are passed onto us when we eat.

The organic choice?

Organic meat has been a way of providing our families with healthier options. However, big business has moved into the organic industry (attracted by profits). While they may meet current organic certification – this does not guarantee ethical and humane treatment of livestock.

At JC Nyman Farms, we feed our animals their natural food – pesticide free grass (50% homegrown grain for foul), allow them to range freely, and breed them in their natural season.

Why JC Nyman Farms?

Knowing where your food comes from and who produces it, is the first and most important step toward good health for you and your family.

We offer a selection of shares to fit your needs. The season begins with lamb and chicken. Beef and pork are available from September to November.

Here’s an example. If you get a half share, mixed package, for six months…you pay approximately $8.40/lb for a mix of cuts of including all four meats, including steak, lamb chops, roasts, sausages, bacon, ground, etc.

As far as price goes, here’s the thing. For non-organic meat in the grocery store, you might pay $5.39/lb for pork loin chops…but you’ll also pay $6.29/lb for beef eye of round or $8.29/lb for top sirloin steak – but they are not grass fed and therefore lack the significant nutritional advantage.

Does this mean we are actually cheaper than non-organic meat in the grocery store? No, but we’re close – and if you value the immeasurable health benefits of naturally raised meat by means of ethical and sustainable farming…then yes, our value cannot be beat.

What should I order?

Each cut is frozen when it arrives at your door.

This allows you serve your family year round – as long as you have the freezer space! So don’t think in terms of having to serve up 20 pounds of meat every month! Calculate what your family will consume for the year.

However, take the time to be sure about your order. Please contact us at 613-476-6120 or jcnyman@kos.net   if you would like assistance on deciding what would be right for your family.

When will I get my first order?

The first order will be delivered Saturday, June 26, 2010.

Can I use my credit card to pay?

Yes, you can pay online using your credit card. Let us know and we will email you a payment request from PayPal – the most popular and secure way to pay online. You can also pay by mailing us a cheque.

Cancellations and refunds

If you are unhappy with your CSA or unable to receive it for any reason – you can obtain a refund by finding someone to replace you / take over your CSA. We are unable to give refunds directly. We may have a list of people interested. Please inquire.

  1. It was great to talk to you today! Jim & I will pin a time to come and see you, then place our order in person. I’m drooling in anticipation!

  2. Hi,

I got your info from the SlowFood Fest at the Gladstone. Making a decision about which CSA to join is being influenced by where/when I would get my stuff. I’m in Mississauga, but assume I would have to go to Toronto to pick-up. Can you let me know the details?

    Laura

    • Hi Laura,

Thanks for your interest in our meat. As of yet, our drop off locations are not set, though there will very likely be one in the High Park area of Toronto.

As for the When, we deliver to the city the last Saturday of the month starting in June.

Hope that helps you make your decision.

      Cheers,
      Colleen

  3. Hi… I just read an article on TheStar about your farm and thought it’s a great. I never knew this existed! I was trying to calculate how much meat the 2 of us eat / month but I never keep track so it’s hard. It seems like we eat about 13.5lb to 16.5lb / month. Is that a lot? Wrong estimate? Also, if we buy the mixed package, will it include eggs? What time of the day does the delivery usually happen? What if we are both at work? Thanks very much!

  4. Hi Sarah,

Thanks for your interest. I haven’t seen the article in the Star yet but I’m glad you did!

We generally say that 10 lbs will feed 2 or 3 people 12 to 15 times so your estimate could be accurate.

The mixed package doesn’t automatically include eggs. We’re working on a waiting list for egg delivery right now so you could be on it if you wanted eggs.

We deliver to Toronto on the last Saturday of each month (June to November) and may be having a drop at one of the markets.

If you’re not able to be there for your drop off, you could have someone else come for it. In special circumstances we can work at finding a special solution!

    Hope this helps you.

    Happy Eating!
    Colleen

  5. Thanks Colleen for the response!
My husband & I are really considering this cause’ we know it’s much healthier for us and it helps local farmers!
Our main concern is still the pickup. We live in Richmond Hill. It seems like a lot of these pick up locations are in midtown or downtown. Would you be able to tell us the closest pick up location near our house?
    THANKS!

  6. Hi again Sarah,

Is Don Mills any better for you?

    Colleen :)

  7. Hi. Was fascinated to find this :-D
When do you deliver to Belleville?

    Ryan

    • Hi Ryan,

We deliver to Belleville and all points between here and Toronto the last weekend of the month from June to November. We also sell from the farm gate if you simply can’t wait until June.

Hope to hear from you soon!
      Colleen

  8. Hi Colleen,

I just discovered this, and it’s exactly what I’ve been looking for (just bought a freezer for this very purpose).

Can you tell me if you’ll be making door-to-door deliveries? I live in the High Park area of Toronto (across from the park on Bloor) but I’m often away on weekends so might have trouble making it out to drop-off points.

    Thanks!
    Amy

  9. Hi,
I am considering getting the mixed package, but I don’t know if I should get the 10 or 20lbs. There is two of us in the household, but also have bbqs in the summer.
Does the payment need to be paid all at once or can it be made in 2 payments?

    Thanks,
    Kristin

  10. I didn’t see information about your beef, how its aged, for how long etc. Could you describe this?

  11. To add to Jill’s question, if you get a half or full share of just beef, could you give an example of what that package would contain?

  12. Hi,

I’m totally interested in the mixed package, but I’m wondering if you allow exclusions? Would I be able to order the half share, but exclude any pork meat? Thanks!
